A large shape with a calm knit

A cardigan is the piece that goes over whatever is already there. This one is cut wide and long and falls like a light jacket, so it can sit over a shirt, a knit or a dress without changing the line underneath.

Design Highlights

The vertical stitch runs through the body and the sleeves and gives the generous shape a quiet direction instead of a soft slump. Large round buttons in a warm metallic tone run down the front and hold the look together without turning it formal. The collar is cut as a flat turn down with pointed corners, which frames the neck and gives the front a finished edge. The sleeves are wide and fall past the wrist, which keeps the line relaxed rather than sharp. Side slits let the hem fall open, so the cardigan keeps its line when it is worn unbuttoned over a wider trouser.

How to Style It

Over a plain shirt and straight jeans it reads relaxed and still tidy. With a slip dress and a flat boot it becomes the layer for a cool evening. Button it for a cleaner front, or leave it open and let the slits do the work at the hip.

A cardigan that makes a plain layer look considered.
