A long line with the arms left free

A vest does one thing better than a coat: it keeps the middle warm while the arms stay free. This one falls well past the hip, so it layers over a hoodie or a knit without pressing on the shoulders, and the long line keeps the outfit reading tall rather than wide.

Design Highlights

The hood is set on firmly and can be drawn in at the volume with a cord, which keeps it from falling forward in wind. A row of snaps runs the length of the front edge and closes quickly, one press at a time, without a zip to line up. Quilting carries evenly across the body and holds the fill in place, and a row of side pockets sits at hand height. The front edge is finished in a straight line from collar to hem, which keeps the shape calm when the vest is worn open.

How to Style It

Over a hooded sweat and straight jeans it becomes the layer for a cold walk. With a long knit and a wide trouser it turns quieter for the office. Keep the sleeves underneath narrow so the armhole stays clean, and let the snaps stay open for a softer fall.

A vest that warms the centre and leaves the arms to move.
